Bicolor Tourmaline/ Multicolor Tourmaline/ Watermelon Tourmaline

Tourmaline is one of the most popular gemstones due to its incredible variety of colors and the beauty of its crystals. This attractive gemstone family is referred to as ‘the gemstone of the rainbow’.

Bicolor Tourmaline & Multicolor Tourmaline

In the fascinating world of gemstones, the tourmaline is very special. Besides being found in a wide range of colors, tourmaline also has two or more colors in the same piece. Stones with two colors are called ‘bi-color tourmaline’, and those with more than two are called ‘multicolor tourmaline’.

Bi-color tourmaline can be pink and green, pink and colorless, brown and green, or blue and green. Some stones have more than two colors. Clean bi-color tourmalines are very rare. The most valued stones have distinct saturated colors with sharp boundaries and eye-flawless.

Watermelon Tourmaline

Tourmalines with a pink center and a green rim, or vice-versa, are called ‘watermelon tourmaline’. The coloring resembles the pink flesh and green rind of a watermelon. The watermelon tourmaline crystals are often cut cross-section into thin slices to show a distinct concentric triangular or hexagonal pattern where a pink core is surrounded by a green rind. An eye-flawless faceted watermelon tourmaline that has a strong red and green in approximately equal amounts is the most sought after, and will command the highest price.

Bicolor tourmaline, multicolor tourmaline, and watermelon tourmaline are so unique and beautiful gemstones. Since each stone is different from the other, they are excellently suited for individual jewelry creation.

The sources of this tourmaline variety include Brazil, South Africa, East Africa, and other localities – like Sri Lanka or Madagascar.

Since ancient days, tourmaline is believed to strengthen the body and spirit. Bicolor tourmaline, multicolor tourmaline, and watermelon tourmaline balance the male/female energies and are useful for attracting love. They are also thought to inspire creativity.
